Low light focus I use this external flash unit with my Canon Rebel xTi. The flash does a great job calculating the amount of light it needs to release to expose the photo, making grossly over exposed or underexposed photos a thing of the past. The ability to bounce the flash off of medium height white ceilings gives you great looking photos to the point where I now prefer using my flash instead of relying on high ISOs, fast lenses and low aperature numbers. Although flash photography is a tricky subject, the casual shooter can leave this flash in automatic mode and get wonderfully exposed photos. However, in my opinion, the BEST PART of this external flash is that it enables you to focus MUCH faster than the built in flash and this is reason alone to pick up the Speedlite 430EX II. Previously, when shooting in low light settings, the camera/lens would struggle to focus and the flash would emit several highly annoying test flashes. The Speedlite has no problem finding and focusing on your subject in low lit catering halls and dark rooms and it does so without the annoying test flashes. Great product!

Great Flash I wish I could tell you all of the neat features this flash has but the truth is, I don’t understand them yet. What I can tell you is that I bought this flash to go along with my first SLR (the Rebel XSI) and it works really great. From a beginners perspective, it saves my camera battery and I definately get better coverage than the built-in flash. The reason I choose this particular model over the existing 430EX model is because there are some minor improvements such as recycle time and a metal foot but also because I read that some of the settings for this flash are [additionally] accessible via the camera’s menu system. This probably isn’t important to some of the pros out there but for me it’s nice to know that I have the bases covered for when I grow in to the camera.

Grandpa loves his new scanner!

After enjoying my now old Epson Perfection 1650, I was assigned the family’s task of scanning our old family slides. I first tried the dedicated slide scanner available at Hammacher Schlemmer. What a piece of c***! After researching dedicated slide scanners for a while, I came upon a review of the Canon 8800F. After further research (I think I reached the end of the Internet during this effort) I ordered one. Now, after having scanned about 500 old slides, and getting used to the new software interface, I’m in love with this scanner. It does a GREAT job scanning the old slides in super-high resolution (4800 dpi) and is also an excellent general purpose scanner. Just a footnote, it takes about 20 minutes to scan four slides at 4800 dpi.

Exceeds my expectations on 35mm slides

I have a large collection of 35mm slides dating back to the mid 1960′s. I now take only digital pictures and view them on a 65″ HDTV with an Xbox 360 hooked up to my computer. I’ve been looking at ways to get my precious slides on my computer. This 8800F scanner exceeds my expectations for ease of use and superb quality scanning my Kodachrome slides. The scanner also included Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 and after scanning in the slides, performing an unsharp mask in Photoshop they look great. Highly recommended.

A great pocket camera for the price

One of the problems with writing camera reviews is that people never consider the “space” which this camera occupies in the market. For example, I know that a $200 point and shoot camera will never take as awesome photos as my $3500 digital SLR, or even as my Powershot G10. But at the same time, I’m not going to go out on a night of drinking with my friends and bring a digital SLR because a) it’s expensive and b) bulky.

Having said that, I’m really impressed at the output of the pictures. At the default high resolution JPG, I was blown away at how crisp the images were. At higher ISOs, the photos became progressively noisier – but that’s a problem that’s common among most point and shoot cameras. I’m not too worried – again, this is a camera I’m taking out and about and taking snapshots, not trying to be Annie Liebovitz. Prints at 8×10 look fine.

The 720p video is rather slick – even while goofing around taking videos, the videos were of decent enough quality that I’d be happy posting them to YouTube or Facebook. And no “rolling shutter’, which is kind of cool. I’d recommend getting a Class 6 SDHC card for the camera, so it’ll write the HD video fast enough to the camera without having to deal with dropping video. The optical zoom doesn’t work in video mode, but digital zoom does. Digital zoom, in my experience, generally leads to awful photos and videos, so I try to avoid it all costs.

The SD780 is easy to operate, and there’s virtually zero learning curve if you have experience with other Canon cameras.

One of the common complaints is that the camera’s casing will attract dings, scratches and other things that will keep your camera looking less than pristine. If you’re going to be buying this camera, you’re better off spending $25 extra to get the Invisible Shield cover for this camera.

For under $250, this camera is great. It’s smaller than my Blackberry and wallet, and makes up deficiencies by being a petite camera that fits in virtually any pocket.

Great Camera

Our last digital camera was seven years old and stopped working. We normally don’t take that many pictures but there were a few times that my wife wished she had one and when I needed one for work, it was time to start looking. My cousin has the ELPH 1200 10 MP and I noticed it took great pictures. After reading reviews and checking out consumer reports we went with the Canon 780 12 MP. At first my wife thought it was too small when she took it out of the box. However, after charging the battery and using it, she can’t put it down.
It is so simple to use and so conveniently small, we almost always have it with us. We have been taking pictures for weeks, even on vacation, and only recently have we had to charge the battery for the first time. The battery lasts a very long time.
I don’t have too many technical aspects to report on, I’m not that camera savvy. I do have to tell that I needed to upload pictures to a site but they were too large. The manual has easy instructions on how to reduce the size of the megapixels and that solved the problem after taking new pictures. For an easy to use, everyday camera that you can take anywhere, I would definitely recommend the ELPH SD780

Great case for a great camera!

I’m not sure what the other reviewer was smoking but this case fits the Canon G10 PERFECTLY. Leather is sometimes a little stiff when it is new, so maybe that was their problem. Every professional photographer knows that you do not want a camera to fit loosely in a case, because whenever it moves around (even a little) it causes friction, and friction ALWAYS causes wear and tear. In any event this case is well made. There is a loop on the back of it so that you can wear it on your belt if you want. This would come in handy on vacations. The cases lid is held on by TWO forms, one is a standard snap closure, and the second is a magnetic action so that the snap doesn’t accidentally come undone. The entire inside of the case is finished in very fine and smooth suede. Stitching is very nice and in some places it is even double stitched. There are recesses on each side of the case (around where the camera straps would be) so that you can easily grab the camera to remove it from the case. If you own a G10 then you will definitely want to own this case, even if you have another camera case with all of your other gear. You’ve probably spent a lot of money on your Canon G10, and this case is made to protect it from any wear, and that’s a job that is does very well.

This leather case is everything that I wanted it to be!!! I was looking a streamlined case to protect my G10 while I carry it around in my purse. I was looking for something as compact as possible yet still protective. This case fits the bill perfectly. I have a larger case that I use to store my extras and accessories in, but wanted a separate compact one just for my camera. It is extremely well made and very sturdy and I love the look!!! I like that there is openings on the sides of the case for the neck straps to come out, it makes it very easy to carry the camera. I have no use for the belt loop. One of the best Canon batteries! Worth the money

This battery is one of the best li-ion batteries I have ever come across. As a camera salesman, I have been able to see and use just about every camera li-ion battery out there. I own the G10 and I use it daily. This battery lasts an extremely long time on a charge and has a very slow discharge rate when sitting on a shelf. It is true that it will hold only so many charges but thats true with any rechargeable battery. The only catch is that this is one of canon’s most expensive batteries. It is a good price on Amazon but expect to pay $70+ at electronic and camera retailers. It may be pricy but worth the money!

Keeps on going and going and going

This battery is just great. I charged up mine when I got my G10 and inserted it into the camera. I’m not a photographer, so I don’t shoot a 100 pics / day, but I take pictures frequently, in average about 40 pictures / day since I got it, and it made 435 pictures. Flash usage was not all the time, but still I’d say about 25% of the time.
Since I have two of those babies, I probably never have to worry about running out of juice while outside at all.

Ben Long Makes it Easy

I recently bought a Canon SXI camera. I read through the manual. The manual is well written, but I felt I needed more information. I found that information in The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSI/450D Companion by Ben Long.
Long takes the approach that you are brand new to photography and have recently bought this great camera. Now, how do you use it? He takes you step by step through using the camera. The first chapter gets you acquainted with the very basic functions of using the camera in full auto mode. By the time I finished the book, I had a very good idea what the camera will and won’t do. I also know how to use it in different situations.
Long’s chapter on composition is one of the best synopses I have read. I have used a film SLR for many years and have read several photography books, so I hope I know what I am talking about.
Canon would do well to bundle this book with the XSI as well as their own very good manual.

Good for boneheads

I am new to the SRL world. I needed a book that would treat me gently. Ben takes you by the hand and walks you through. He presented information in a way that is not overwhelming. This is not a read it from cover to cover book and then go out and be a photographer. THis was designed to read a section at a time, then pick up your camera and tinker. Ben gives you little “assignments” to help with ths process. He shares ideas and tibits so that you can morph yourself into photography as a hobby. The information in the book is presented in a logical manner so that the information is tangible and useable. At the end of the book, I was able to play with my camera but am also very aware that I have a lot more to learn about photography. If a chose to do so, this could be a hobby that lasts a lifetime, that will not get boring, will always present some new challenge

Great deal…holds all my equipment plus room for more

I bought this bag to store, carry, and protect my Rebel XSi. The extra battery and filter were just icing on the cake, since the bag was really what I was after. I love that the sections are all removable and you can customize how you want the dividers set up. I have my camera body, two lenses, all the instruction manuals, lens pen, extra battery and chargers, usb cables, usb card reader, photo tips book, and all my extra memory cards in it. There is still room for my P&S and two more lenses or one lens and a flash. The bag is perfect and will grow with me as I add more accessories next Christmas! I also like the fact that there are tripod straps on the front for when I get a tripod, and the bag zips so nothing will accidently fall out. Padding seems adequate and I know my precious camera is safe. It took several weeks to arrive since it was out of stock, but it was totally worth the wait!

This bag was a total steal since it came with the battery and the UV lens. I read some of the reviews saying it was too big but for me it was perfect because I feel like it is protecting my camera. IS is the way to go

okay so granted i just got this lens today and have limited use with it but i also own a canon 70-200 L series lens WITHOUT stabilization and the difference to me was immediately apparent. i am not one to carry around a tripod which is what you need with my other lens in order to get a clear shot all of the time. yes this lens does feel much cheaper and it was! but the point and shoot shots came out much clearer. i did not notice any color differences between the two lens as mentioned in a previous review. and i also gained mm on both ends which fits nicely with the kit lens. i am so satisfied that after one day i have already placed my other lens for sale on ebay. any takers!

Best lens for the money

This is an excellent lens for under $500. It is designed to be a good all purpose tele zoom lens for non-pros. I think it fits the bill nicely. The lens is very sharp at all focal lengths and really doesn’t have any bad spots like most cheap lenses. Aperture is a bit on the slow side, but normal for a lens in its class. The Image Stabilization really works well. You won’t want a telephoto lens without it once you’ve had it. Build quality is about normal for the price. It is mostly plastic, but that keeps down on the weight. Macro performance is pretty good, too. It is a 1/3 magnification, which is a bit better than average without being an advertised macro lens. You can certainly fill the frame with a flower bud or a leaf, if that is what you are after. I give it 5 stars, not because it is the best lens in the world, but because it is the best lens for the price and the intended photographers. It pairs perfectly with the 18-55 IS and then you get a seamless range of 18-250 (28-400 equiv), all Image stabilized. The next step up is at least twice the money. Nothing else in the price range can compare with the features, sharpness and focal range in my opinion.

Great for astrophotography

I love this camera. With the Live View, all I do is hook it up to my laptop, and find a bright star, and magnify the view on the laptop and I can focus in seconds. With the Xti and no Live View, it was a long, painful process that never really focused right. Once focused, I can take several long exposure pictures with no problem. Much less noise at higher ISO’s than the Xti. I was able to get great pictures, first night out.

Great Camera!

After countless hours of research and comparisons, I finally decided to purchase the Canon Xsi. I’ve only had it a month, but in that time I’ve taken over 3000 photos and am very pleased with the results. Against the Canon S5 IS point and shoot that I had previously, this camera wins hands down. I agree that the kit lens isn’t the best lens in the universe, but it is a great starter lens. Also sometimes in low light situations the camera’s AF does focus on something other than the subject, but using manual focus fixes the problem. I just recently purchased a converter and attached a spotting scope to the camera, making the scope into a 1000-4000mm lens. The camera handled it beautifully and with the bulb function and a tripod and remote switch, I have gotten some excellent moon photos. Overall this is a great camera for those considering a first Dslr, and it is quite a step up in photo quality from even the high-zoom point and shoots.
