Delightfully Easy To Use Netbook After a bad experience with an Asus with 9 inch screen and solid state drive (very hard to type on and VERY slow operation) I was quite reluctant to try another netbook but this one was on sale so I went ahead. What I have is the e-machines version which is made by Acer and is identical to the Aspire one.
With an Atom N270 running at 1.6 Ghz it does get rather warm but not unbearable and the speed is well worth it. With few exceptions it runs as fast as my full size laptop and is very enjoyable to surf the web on. The Windows 7 starter is a perfect match for this machine and pleasingly simple with loads of widgets to customize the home screen and desktop endlessly. Oddly Windows 7 starter won’t play DVD’s as MS wants $80. for the Windows 7 Home Edition that will. Not a real problem as I can get a DVD player for much less than $80. if I want to watch movies on a proper hdtv screen.
I’ve found that a 93% keyboard as found on 10 inch netbooks is the perfect size. Just large enough for comfortable typing while keeping the machine as small and lightweight as possible. I’ve investigated a great many more expensive netbooks but this one is totally sufficient for all I do and a bargain to boot.

Glad I bought it Use mine mainly for email, web surfing and documents. Love it! Does everything my old laptop did at half the weight and half the price. My battery lasts longer than 3 hours – a big help when traveling. Much easier when going through airport security. And, it is pretty too!

Can’t Beat What You Get For The Price I strongly disagree with a previous review of this netbook. I also purchased this model number from a different vendor (I just needed it right away) and I have to say that you get a lot for what you are paying. True–it is not as fast as a dual-core processor laptop but that’s the point–it doesn’t need to be! I surfed the web, I watched streaming video on both Netflix and Hulu, I typed a document and you know what? It all worked great! What else can you ask for? Any complaints? Yeah, it doesn’t make me toast in the morning. I don’t understand what people are yelling about!

It’ just fine for me I ordered this Acer AO532h-2588 on the 16th and although S & H was free, I paid for it to be here on the 18th. It was and the extra S & H was worth it. I love this. I only purchased it to have something for when I’m on the go. The ONLY 2 complaints I have are about the battery and the fact that it runs pretty hot. I let it charge completely, while it was off. But when I go to turn it on, it’ll say 100% but with only 6 hrs. remaining. But it doesn’t really run out fast so it’s not a big deal. As far as it running hot, it does, and fast. But a cooling fan will fix that. So again, no biggie. As far as it being slow, maybe I just got lucky because I haven’t had that problem. The web is fast and when I go to open a regular program, it opens right up. The volume is just fine for me. I can have it in my living room and still hear it clearly in the kitchen. I absolutely love the display. Crystal clear and pristine. I also love how on start-up, it automatically found my home network. Guess that’s what it meant when it said it was Wi-Fi certified because I went and spent 30 bucks on a Wireless Adapter and I don’t need it now. The Windows 7 Starter is nice. Nothing to jump up & down about to me though. Also, the weight is just fine. A little is added with the battery attached but that’s to be expected. And it’s very sturdy. All-in-all, this is a GREAT netbook for regular and simple computer operations. I have a desktop that works just fine so this doesn’t need to do too much for me.

This is the Windows XP edition but has a larger battery and bluetooth Please be aware that this comes with Windows XP, not Windows 7 Starter which has become the de facto standard for netbooks.

This may actually be appealing if you want to run XP, either because you don’t want to learn the new operating system, Win7, or because you see specific legacy advantages to XP (may run slightly faster than Win7 on the lightweight Atom processors that run most netbooks). Please note that if you don’t want to learn the new operating system, that probably isn’t the best of reasons since long-term support is probably going to be better for Win7, and Microsoft is reporting fewer virus problems with Win7 than with XP (although that may just be due to the fact that Win7 is still new).

Other than the operating system advantages/disadvantages, this unit comes with a more powerful battery (10 hour battery life from 5400 m.a. battery); the other current a0532h editions have a lower power rating, hence 8 hours of battery life. Also, this unit has Bluetooth.

So for about $30 over the cost of the more common edition, you downgrade to WinXP and upgrade to Bluetooth and a stronger battery.

If you are upgrading the memory module, latest user postings indicate you need to use an 800 Mhz module (PC-6400, not PC-5300 as indicated by the Acer published specs).

My rating of this unit is based on my brief ownership of the “standard” Win7 edition Acer AO532h-2223 10.1-Inch Matrix Silver Netbook – Up to 8 Hours of Battery Life.

My current favorite among netbooks is the HP Mini 210 HP Mini 210-1010NR 10.1-Inch Black Netbook – 4.25 Hours of Battery Life, due primarily to its matte screen (instead of glossy). But the Acer a0532h’s have some appealing features, like wireless “n” support, and a 6 cell battery (in the lower capacity) for the same price as the HP with a 3 cell battery and wireless “g”.

I have this WinXP edition Acer on order and will insert a comment to this original post to provide some hands-on notes later.

One of the best decisions I’ve made I tend to think of myself as very methodical when it comes to electronics purchases, and my netbook purchase was no exception. I wanted great construction, performance, battery life, and value. That’s a lot to ask for anything. But here is why I picked the 1005PE-MU17. For reference, here are the other considerations that I had in mind before I settled on the 1005PE-MU17.

1) Asus 1005PE-PU17 ($372)
2) HP 5102 ($400+)
3) Toshiba NB305-410 ($400)

Construction:
I’ll admit it, the HP 5102 and Toshiba NB305 are better constructed. The 1005PE-PU17 has the same construction as this one. However, that doesn’t mean this netbook’s construction is poor in any sense. It feels solid throughout, the screen isn’t flimsy, and the keystrokes are crisp. I don’t really have a problem typing on the keyboard, but the right shift key will take some time to get used to (not that I use it that often anyway). It is light, and the screen is beautiful for its size. At full power, the graphics on screen are very crisp, I always love gloss screens, because they play videos and so much better. A BIG part of the reason I went with the 1005PE-MU17 over the 1005PE-PU17 is the color choice. The 1005PE-PU17 has only gloss black and gloss blue finishes. I saw these netbooks with dirty fingerprints at the store, and it really takes a lot away from your netbook. By trying to get those fingerprints off, you get more on, and it’s really just an endless uphill battle. You can’t win. This was enough to warrant me from getting the 1005PE-PU17 series. Luckily, the 1005PE-MU17′s 11 hour battery life (as opposed to the 14 hour battery life in the 1005PE-PU17) suits me, and I can live without the bluetooth that the PU17 series adds. The gloss white finish is beautiful, and you can’t notice fingerprints on any of the white parts. It’s also very attractive, giving off kind of an ipod-esque feel. Get the gloss white, you’ll be happy you did.

Performance:
It’s great. In all test reviews I read (a lot) the 1005PE series beats out the Toshiba and the HP series netbooks. All were equipped with the new N450 Atoms. While only very marginally, real performance gains are to be had. An attractive feature however, is the Asus ExpressGate. It boots up almost instantly into this mini OS and from there you can chat or surf the web. It’s simple and easy. Mouse controls feel slightly different in this Expressgate configuration, but you get used to it. Also, reviews indicated that the HP 5102 tended to get a bit hot and the fan made audible noise in quiet rooms. This is great for libraries, and the fan goes, but you really can’t hear it. I’ve found no hot spots either. So it performs better and runs cool? Yes it does, and extremely well.

Battery Life:
One of the biggest points of owning a netbook is battery life. You want a small computer you can use everywhere, but you shouldn’t have to carry a charger everywhere you go. Can you imagine if you needed to carry around your battery charger everywhere you went with your cell phone? No, and it’s great that for this netbook, you don’t have to. A full charge, under reasonable conditions (not a fully lit screen or super high performance mode) should last you all day. No need to visit an outlet or hunt for one in a crowded coffee shop. Whether it’s school or work or simply going to Starbucks for the day to read, you can stay connected without having to lug around the charger. That is one of the biggest benefits of the new N450 Atom processor. You can look forward to nearly 11 hours. I could have gotten the 1005PE-PU17 with the 14 hour battery, which is great in itself, but I knew the fingerprints would have driven me crazy. With the 1005PE-MU17 and its 11 hour battery life, it is nearly as good, but you don’t have to be committed into an insane asylum after constantly fighting off the fingerprint smudges. And if anyone wants to know, the charger is tiny anyway, nothing near what my full size notebook needs. So even if you do have to carry it, you can throw it into your purse or backpack and its minimal anyway. Big plus!

Value:
At around $320-$330, this netbook is a steal for this value. While the other netbooks have slightly better construction materials, they don’t really beat this one in performance (other than the 1005PE-PU17, but like I said….FINGERPRINTS). This is the core netbook that all netbooks on the market try to beat. And everyone knows it. Asus is still king of the netbook market bar none.

Final Thoughts:
I really wanted the 1005PE-PU17 because it had even better battery life and the extra bluetooth , but I couldn’t find anything but that fingerprint attracting gloss black and gloss blue in the US. Those colors are not designed for function, they’re designed for PR photos. It looks attractive and all when it’s new and untouched, but in actual execution it’s not so great. Go check any of the gloss options at retail stores, you’ll see what I mean. I don’t know who decides on the colors, but there needs to be more options other than that. I wish I wish I wish. But, the 1005PE-MU17 stepped it up with its beautiful gloss white finish, excellent performance, and great battery life. I know there’s people out there who are in the same dilemma about the fingerprints, and this netbook is your answer. Get it and be merry.

Memory upgrade – Crucial CT1166735 I recently got my ASUS Eee PC 1005PE (1005PE-PU17-BU) and am happy with it. I planned to upgrade to 2GB and ordered the Crucial CT25664AC800 as was recommended in some reviews. However, some people have had trouble with this.

Crucial now has a recommendation for the ASUS 1005PE: the 2GB CT1166735, which appears to have the same specifications as the CT25664AC800. The Crucial site doesn’t appear to be working quite right because it says there are four possible products which can be used, but only shows the one. Further, the Crucial program which scans your computer and makes upgrade recommendations didn’t run on the ASUS — a Win 7 issue?

Searching the Crucial site for CT25664AC800 gives the surprising result that there are FIVE versions of this ram module by different manufacturers – two from Intel, two from Diamond Flower, and one from MSI. It’s possible to order a particular kind of CT25664AC800 from Crucial or just place a generic order. Perhaps the inconsistent results people have with the CT25664AC800 are due to different implementations of it.

I plan to return the unopened CT25664AC800 that I received from Amazon as it does not appear to be the recommended Crucial memory, although the specifications are identical to the Crucial CT1166735. The CT1166735 is apparently only manufactured by one supplier and the ASUS 1005PE is mentioned explicitly in its description.

All in all, the 10005ha is probably the best all around netbook you can buy. While the toshiba and the samsung have better keyboards, and the toshiba has a better mouse…the samsungs speakers are much improved…each oft hose has major flaws (toshibas battery sticks out of the case and their speaker is on the BOTTOM…Samsung used a glossy screen that reflects direct light and becomes unwatchable unless shaded! Plus its a 270 prcoessor not a 280, and no BT).
If you want the biggest and baddest power netbook out there, the asus is it.

Just not THIS one. There are various flavors, all called 1005HA. You really WANT the bigger one. You get BluteTooth, you get a 10.5 hour battery instead of this measly 3 cell 4 hour thing, and you also get a real camera (1.3mp, good enough for skype chatting at decent level…the 0.3 that this stripped down model comes with I wouldnt OWN! Thats designed output resolution size smaller than a PDA screen!!! Cellphones have better cameras!)

Yes, I strongly recommend the asus…they make a good machine. Anything with an N270 or 280 really isnt half bad. Unfortunately newer netbookz will all start getting the cheaper slower Z processors…thank you for that INTEL….so if you are planning to do MORE Than email or chat…wanna run some programs…or god forbid MULTITASK, the newer 12 inch netbooks will all be SLOWER! The few already available all have Z processors, and all the future ones are scheduled to. Its a chip thing. Plus the N’s like the 1005ha are ridiculously power efficient…hence the longer battery lyfe.

But a 1005 (or a 1008, less battery, but prettier with covered side ports…if that matters to you)

You cant go wrong with a toshiba either. I liked mine, the keyboard was great, so was the mousepad…samsung also…but you try all 3, and you realizee mostly identical after practice….but the asus has better performance in all the unfelt but measurables. longer battery, beter performance (slightly) bluetooth, Wireless N, its the one. At least for the moment.
