I originally purchased a Panasonic LX5 which is a wonderful camera, however, I wanted a camera I could easily slip in and out of a pocket and the LX5 was a little heavy and thick. Keeping track of a loose lens cap on the LX5 worried me also. I ended up replacing the LX5 with the Canon S95. I have been very happy with this camera. The menus are easy to use with a large variety of options, the screen is bright and sharp, the quality of photos is excellent, and the battery life is good. Being able to assign the lens ring to different functions is very handy. The camera body is less slippery than the S90, however, I still opted for the Richard Franiec Canon S95 grip which makes the camera much more secure in my hand. The control ring has also been improved over the S90 but still moves fairly easily so I opted for the Lensmate control dial ring which inexpensively solves that problem. There are three things I don’t like about the camera. Two are fairly insignificant but one does bother me. The wrist strap that comes with the camera has no slider to tighten it around your wrist so it’s just one big loop that will easily slide off your hand. I am using a wrist strap from another camera. The plastic door that covers the USB port does not have a solid feel when closing and it makes me feel like its going to flip back open. I worry that it will not close properly after many openings and closings so I opted for a card reader instead. The one major point I do not like about the camera is the way the flash is operated. In order to turn on the flash the camera must be supported in the left hand and the natural position of your left index finger is right on top of the flash that is trying to pop up. It is also easy to push the flash button on the control ring with your thumb when you don’t want to. First it will run into your left index finger then it will take several strokes to get the flash back to the off position. My ideal situation would be a switch operated by the left hand that when pushed would raise the flash. Or at least have the button that is not right under the thumb. All in all this is the best point and shoot camera I have ever owned (this is my 6th) and would highly recommend it.

One thing I forgot to mention when I first wrote this review is a program the LX5 has that I wish would be incorporated in the Canon S95. Before I sent the LX5 back for the S95 I played around with a program that does double and triple exposures. A really fun option. I’d like to see this on the next Canon S95 Sale Black Friday.

I love this Canon S95 (black friday s95). The Canon S95 is my new everyday walking-around camera, replacing my Canon G10 (and very briefly a Nikon P7000). The S95 produces images of wonderful quality with good noise control (for a 1/1.7 sensor camera) all the way to ISO 2000. Operation of the menus and controls is very fast with little to no delay in selecting menu options. The customizable front control ring allows you to quickly change frequently used settings. Battery life could be better, but I’m getting a little more than the advertised 200 shots per charge, and the battery is small and light enough that it’s easy to carry a couple of spares.
