A Gate at the Stairs [DECKLE EDGE] (Hardcover)
A Gate at the Stairs [DECKLE EDGE] (Hardcover) Lorrie Moore’s people are jokesters, wisenheimers. They hold the world, and the language used to describe it, a little off to the side, where they can turn it around and, if not figure it out, at least find something funny to say about it, which, often, is not quite enough. It’s been 11 years since her last book, 15 since her last novel, but A Gate at the Stairs is vintage Moore: brittly witty and lurkingly dark, the portrait of a Midwest college town through the eyes of Tassie Keltjin, a student from the country whose mind has been lit up by learning but who spends nearly all this story out of class, as a nanny for a couple who have adopted a toddler.
A Gate at the Stairs [DECKLE EDGE] (Hardcover) Reviews
brilliant and courageous
Moore has the uncommon combination of intelligence, wit, courage and writing skill to bring together such diverse topics as bass guitar, midwest sensibility, liberal phoniness, college life, friendship, sex, …. I will stop here because no list of things examined by Tassie would be exhaustive. I am no writer, so please excuse my feeble effort to express how deeply this book resonated with me. Suffice it to say that it was a heck of a read.
IF YOU CAN’T SAY SOMETHING NICE THEN DON’T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!
I can’t believe all of the nasty, unfair, and in most everyone else’s opinion, WRONG reviews! Shame on people who refuse to see the good!!! Moore’s writing is everything writing should be! It’s expertly written, witty, humorous, and dire all at the same time, to get the fabulous storyline across, which serves also as proof of a great creative mind! While I’m here I am also excited about another upcoming fascinating author that floored me, LINDA MASEMORE PIRRUNG,with EXPLOSION IN PARIS.
